Ransomware News: Pennsylvania Senate Paid $700K After Ransomware Attack

A ransomware infection from last year cost the Pennsylvania Senate over $700,000. According to a recent report, the ransomware attack encrypted their entire IT system. The original ransom demand was about 28 bitcoin, equal to $30,000.

State officials followed best practices and declined to pay the ransom. Even if you give in to the ransom demand, there is no guarantee you will get your data back and you are simply funding cyber criminals and allowing their attacks to perpetuate.

Unfortunately, their insufficient business continuity solution forced them to rebuild their entire IT system resulting in a much larger expense than it should have. While this attack is certainly crippling, it doesn’t come anywhere close to the recent attacks in Atlanta that have cost an estimated $2.6 million.

This is yet another prime example that the only solution and defense for a ransomware attack is a BCDR solution. To find out how to protect against ransomware and what MSPs can do to fight back, check out the full report.
